Em 2002, após completar 20 anos de Soul Asylum, Dave Pirner lança no mercado seu primero álbum solo, Faces And Names. A idéia do disco saiu meio sem querer, mas na verdade não é a primeira atividade de Pirner longe de seus colegas de banda.

O mais notório dos projetos extra-Soul Asylum foi a participação na Backbeat Band em 1993, supergrupo montado para a trilha sonora do filme de mesmo nome (saiba mais aqui). Dave também colaborou com diversos outros artist
